Surface to Success combines PADI scuba certification, trauma-informed mental health counseling, and workforce development into one immersive 12-week experience designed to help justice-impacted individuals reclaim their lives.

Most reentry programs address one dimension of a person's life. We address three simultaneously — because lasting change requires healing the mind, building real skills, and opening real doors.
Mental Health
Licensed trauma-informed counselors work with participants from day one, providing individual and group therapy throughout the program.
PADI Certification
Participants earn a globally recognized Professional Association of Diving Instructors Open Water Diver certification — a credential that opens doors to marine careers worldwide.
Workforce Development
Resume building, interview coaching, job placement support, and connections to marine industry employers.
The four phases of transformation
Foundation
We begin where healing begins — with trust. Participants complete a trauma-informed intake assessment, establish therapeutic relationships with their counselor, and begin building community with their cohort. No diving yet. Just grounding.

Pool Training
Participants enter the water for the first time in a controlled pool environment. PADI-certified instructors guide them through foundational skills — buoyancy, breath control, equipment use — while counselors continue weekly sessions to process what surfaces emotionally.

Open Water
The ocean becomes the classroom. Participants complete their four required PADI open water dives, earning full certification. This phase is transformative — the silence, the weightlessness, the depth — participants consistently describe it as a turning point.

Launch
With certification in hand and healing underway, participants turn toward the future. Career coaches work one-on-one to identify opportunities in the marine economy — dive instruction, marine biology, harbor operations, aquaculture, and more.

Every week is intentional. Here's exactly what participants experience across the 12-week journey.
Healing is not optional. It's the foundation.
Every participant in the Surface to Success program is paired with a licensed clinical therapist from day one. Our mental‑health component is not a supplement — it is the backbone of everything we do. We believe that without addressing the psychological wounds of incarceration, poverty, and systemic trauma, no skill or certification can create lasting change. Scuba diving amplifies this healing work: the water itself becomes a therapeutic environment. Through buoyancy, controlled breathing, and the calming effects of the dive reflex, participants experience reduced stress, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety that many have never felt before. The ocean becomes a place where trauma softens, confidence grows, and the mind finally has room to breathe.
Individual Therapy
Weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist throughout the full 12 weeks.
Group Processing
Facilitated group sessions where cohort members process shared experiences and build community.
Somatic & Ocean Therapy
The ocean itself is therapeutic — we use the physical experience of diving as a somatic healing modality.
Alumni Continuity
Mental health support continues after graduation through our alumni network and referral partnerships.
